Why we need to stay hydrated:
~ It’s imperative for optimal brain function. When you are feeling the afternoon sluggish slump, it’s probably because you haven’t consumed enough fluids throughout the day
~ Prevents your skin from looking and feeling dry
~ It revs your metabolism
~ Reduces or eliminates muscle cramping
~ Water is an essential component for the transport of nutrients and oxygen
~ Regulates body temperature
An accurate way to assess your fluid needs is to aim for at least half of your body weight in ounces daily. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, you should consume 60 ounces of fluid per day. Allow for extra fluids during long periods of exercise. If you want to be precise, weigh yourself before and after exercise. For every pound lost in sweat, consume an extra 16 ounces of fluid. This is in addition to your daily requirement.
All fluids, except alcohol, count toward your daily fluid requirement, even your morning iced coffee and tea. The latest studies reveal that caffeinated beverages have hydrating effects similar to water.
Although all fluids count toward your daily needs, avoid sugary beverages like sodas, fruit juice, most sports drinks. Stick to water and other zero or low calorie, naturally flavored waters and sparkling waters (La Croix, Dasani, etc.). The better sports drinks are the Nunn hydrating electrolyte tablets, SOS hydrating drink powder, and Hydra-Guard Recharge.
Tips to stay hydrated:
~ Keep some type of fluid with you all day and sip on it
~ Get a new, fancy water bottle and keep it filled
~ Experiment with different sparkling waters and tea
~ Drink a full glass of water or two before you start your day
